IIT dean change reportedly due to Wiel Arets’s lack of leadership

The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) College of Architecture has appointed Dr. Michelangelo Sabatino as the interim dean for a one-year term. Sabatino will be taking over for Dutch architect Wiel Arets, who was appointed to the dean position in 2012. Reliable sources have indicated to The Architect's Newspaper that the change in leadership came as the faculty was unhappy with Arets’s leadership, or lack thereof, at the college. With a thriving practice in Amsterdam, Arets was often splitting time between Europe and Chicago. Arets will continue at IIT as faculty, starting with the 2017–2018 school year.

Wiel Arets wins design for Europaalee Site

Wiels Arets Architects recently won a competition to design the “Europaallee site D” building in Zurich. The building is a pivotal component in the emerging mixed use district of “Europaallee,” a major infrastructure project which will incorporate 6,000 workplaces, 1,800 study spaces, 400 flats, one hotel, shops, restaurants, and other leisure activities. The winning entry accommodates retail activities and circulation spaces on the lower floors, while the upper volumes contain flexible office space. The building has been designed with scope for a residential component in the future. The dual program of the building posed a challenge in creating two distinctive lighting and spatial functions. The main entry has been positioned along the parallel ‘Europaaallee', and opens onto the ground floor's main retail and circulation spaces. From the ground floor, a central staircase complemented by two ramping escalators traverses and connects these areas. The design is sympathetic to its context, with the thoughtful alignment of its highest points with the adjacent trackside facades, thus creating a unified design aesthetic throughout the new district. Construction of the building will commence in 2017, and is scheduled for completion in 2019.

IIT Names Wiel Arets New Architecture Dean

The Illinois Institute of Technology named Dutch designer Wiel Arets as the new dean of its architecture school Tuesday. Currently a professor at the Berlin University for the Arts, Arets will replace Donna Robertson. Arets is an acclaimed architect whose firm, WAA, has studios in Amsterdam, Berlin, Maastricht, and Zürich. His current projects include Amsterdam Central Station’s IJhal, Allianz Headquarters in Zürich, and the A’ House in Tokyo. Mies van der Rohe chaired IIT’s architecture school for 20 years starting in 1938 and designed its main campus on Chicago’s South Side.
