Combining two panels of fiberglass mounted in aluminum-clad frames, this folding patio door system features a bottom-mounted track system. When open, it provides floor-to-ceiling views that are also maintained when closed through its large glass profile.

The Signature Collection is one of three collections revamped in the consolidation of two brands—Marvin Windows and Doors and Integrity Windows and Doors—into Marvin. It is equipped with a 900-megahertz wireless network that syncs to the remote and Ply Gem’s DreamViewApp to control automated opening.

Lift & Slide Door Series 2000 Skyline Windows

Most sliding doors are heavy and have to be dragged open. The Lift & Slide Door Series 2000 is furnished with a handle that rotates 180 degrees to lift the sash off the tracks so it easily glides open.

Sun Tunnel Velux This unconventional daylighting solution brings natural light inside through a discreet aperture. The light tunnel provides diffused sunlight that runs all the way from the roof to the room below. YWW 60 TU YKK AP Designed to fit floor-to-ceiling spans, this thermally broken window wall system is equipped with YKK’s patented Megatherm insulating gasketing system. It provides thermal performance for one-inch glazing (or ¼ inch infill using adaptors).

Chinese Porcelain PPG PPG named Chinese Porcelain—a deep, saturated, navy blue—the 2020 color of the year. The hue is said to promote relaxation and tranquility in “the anxiety of a fast-paced world.” 2020 Colormix Forecast Sherwin-Williams Paint purveyor Sherwin-Williams debuted 5 palettes of 45 colors to promote the ongoing trend of wellness. Combinations of neutral, nature-inspired hues are designed to foster healthy building environments via the beauty of color.

Unity Reflect Unity Technologies At last! No more waiting for files to transfer from Revit. The new platform automatically syncs projects in real time in Autodesk across all platforms—from desktop, to mobile, to VR, and AR. It will be available in fall 2019. OpenCA IngeniousIO This cloud-based construction administration management platform is designed to help architects and engineers collaborate. The visually-driven design clearly illustrates process, progress, goals, and landmarks while simultaneously allowing for real-time feedback.  

Acoustics

LightFrame Decoustics Utilizing back-lit LED lights, these acoustic fabric panels emit light while simultaneously absorbing noise. A UV coating is applied to the stretched fabric to prevent color fading and ensure optimal lighting. MetalWorks Torsion Spring Shapes Armstrong Ceiling & Wall Solutions These geometric tiles create custom ceilings that absorb sound. The modular design allows for a range of applications to control noise in open areas and small spaces. It is available in 2D- or 3D-patterned panels, non-perforated or perforated, in a full spectrum of custom colors.

Some of the best new and noteworthy furniture from ICFF 2019
From May 20 to 23, over 38,000 people flocked to the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) to see the latest designs. Inside the glass walls of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, over 900 designers and manufacturers from around the world showcased the latest offerings in furniture, lighting, kitchen and bath, textiles, wall coverings, and flooring. Here, we highlight the products that are new and noteworthy.

Outdoor Furniture

Monceau collection Fermob Monceau Collection Fermob Fermob introduced four new seating pieces into its colorful collection of park furniture. New additions include the xl armchair, the low armchair, xl bench, and rocking chair (our personal favorite). Solar Lounger NEA Studio Outfitted with a photovoltaic panel in the adjustable backrest, this wooden slatted bench features integrated LEDs that illuminate from the inside. It is offered in mobile or stationary versions.  

Lighting

Penna Collection Cerno To celebrate the lighting company’s ten year anniversary, in-house designer Nick Sheridan designed the Penna collection to represent the aesthetic vocabulary of the brand. Fashioned in walnut, brass, and leather, the fixtures are representative of Cerno’s bold use of solid wood, strap-work, and metal detailing. Pebble Series by Lukas Peet ANDlight Canadian designer Lukas Peet envisioned a series of glass lights that emulate the tactile qualities of stone. Including a pendant and ceiling/wall fixture, the collection features translucent glass blown forms available in four naturalesque finishes: pearl, travertine, slate, and citrine. Hemera Desk Lamp Ross Gardam Melbourne-based designer Ross Gardam debuted the Hemera Desk Lamp at ICFF to inaugurate the brand’s U.S. presence and new platform to distribute lighting across the country. Inspired by brutalist architecture of the 1960s, the marble fixture comprises two intersecting cylindrical forms that appear to have no visible light source.

Bath

CL.1 Dornbracht This collection of crystal fittings features the ephemeral qualities of light and shadow. Eight handle shades are offered in three finishes. Advanced Control Laufen Advanced Control is a cloud solution that connects plumbing to building management systems to monitor water usage, configure settings remotely, and indicate when maintenance is required. It will be available beginning summer 2019.

Hardware

Jay Jeffers for The Access by Accurate Accurate Lock & Hardware Accurate Lock & Hardware teamed up with interior designer Jay Jeffers on a new line of architectural hardware. Encapsulating a range of locks, pulls, knobs, and handles, each collection features finely detailed metal finishes available with smart lock technologies. Hollywood Hills collection Baldwin Hardware Interior designer Erinn Valencich designed a range of hardware inspired by the glamorous interiors from the golden era of Hollywood. Including cabinet hardware, roses, deadbolts, knobs, and handles, the collection is available in 19 finishes.

The newest sun shading and screening solutions to minimize solar heat gain

These new screening and sun shading solutions decrease solar gain and add a little panache to any building envelope.

Sculpted 3D Metalwërks Articulate dynamic facades with these custom three-dimensional metal screens. Available in three interchangeable wall panel shapes, the modular system is designed to be easily integrated with LED lighting and to incorporate planters and irrigation for growing vegetation. LARGO NOVA 1032 HAVER & BOECKER Provide sun protection with this panel system that is ideal for facade, ceiling, or wall applications. The stainless steel architectural mesh filters sunlight through a crimped pattern and provides ample views out through its semitransparent geometry.
Fabricoil Cascade Architectural This metal fabric system is ideal to manage solar gain. The screens can be installed around a building envelope to control the amount of sun filtering in and, at the same time, provide unobstructed views through the semitransparent coiled fabric.
Living Walls Eco Brooklyn Plant custom living walls on building envelopes to filter air and cultivate biodiversity. These vertical gardens can support any number of flora with WaterGrip growing media, including fruits and vegetables (weather and climate permitting).
Architectural Metal Systems BŌK Modern BŌK Modern’s metal panel systems are CNC-cut to fit each site-specific application. The decorative cutouts are particularly pleasing when patterned shadows are cast from the sunshades on to the surrounding environs.
SMARTIA PG120F Fixed Pergola System ALUMIL Regulate brightness and airflow in outdoor spaces with Alumil’s fully automated pergola. Rotating louvers adjust electronically to protect against rain, wind, and other undesirable weather. The structure is available with a number of custom features, including sliding glass panels, vertical shutters, heating devices, and integrated lighting.

Curtain-wall systems speed up construction and minimize solar heat gain

Prefabrication and new thermally-broken barriers are enabling curtain-wall systems that minimize heat transfer and minimize on-site construction time.

YUW 750 TU Thermally Broken Unitized Curtain Wall YKK AP

YKK AP improved the existing YUW 750 curtain wall system with a new advanced thermal barrier that minimizes heat transfer. The unitized system is glazed and assembled in a quality-controlled environment and then shipped on site for speedy construction.

2500 UT Unitwall Kawneer

Kawneer’s glass system is ideal for high- to mid-rise applications. The glass unitized curtain wall comprises a four-sided barrier block system designed for thermal performance.

CW-250 Curtain Wall GAMCO

To accommodate insulated and monolithic glass, this glass structural system is offered in several back-member framing sizes. Flexible enough to actualize the most inventive facades, the system integrates doors, projected windows, louvers, and metal panel options.

PDR-225 Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope

This window wall is shop-assembled and sealed with a 3/8" polyurethane break to provide optimal thermal performance. It can be glazed for interior and exterior applications alike.

Jumbo Anti-Reflective Glass AGNORA Aptly dubbed, AGNORA’s 236” x 126” monolithic glass panels are ideal for any application where excessive glare would otherwise be a problem. Each sheet is coated with anti-glare coating by Guardian Glass. isopure sedak Thanks to new lamination manufacturing methods, isopure, a new system from sedak, yields nearly seamless large glass expanses. The safety glass adheres together with seemingly invisible butt joints that afford zero sightlines in large-scale, all-glass facades and roofs. SOLARBAN 60 Vitro Architectural Glass Vitro Architectural Glass’s SOLARBAN 60 is designed to provide thermal comfort year-round and reduce heating and cooling costs. This is achieved by a clear coating that blocks 62 percent of solar light transmission while also allowing 70 percent of visible light to filter through the glass. Harmony SageGlass SageGlass designed a digital in-pane system that transitions the glass from tinted to completely clear. The system works to provide heat, daylight, and solar management with pixel-like lines that occupy the glass surface in various gradients depending on the time of day and other extraneous conditions. AviProtek T Walker Glass Walker Glass glazes Pilkington North America’s pyrolytic coated panels to create bird-safe glass with a fritting pattern that contrasts with the reflective surface. Effectively, the coated patterns deter birds from colliding with the facade while remaining hardly discernable to the human eye. UltraClear Guardian Glass This “ultra-clear” low-iron glass maximizes views with its reduced green tint, developed to deliver nearly untinted views. When combined with Guardian’s low-E coating, SunGuard, the system reduces solar gain.

These all-black shingles generate energy without the bulky infrastructure that typically accompanies solar panels. Simply installed directly on the roof, the environmentally conscious system can be employed on new and existing structures.

Marmi Maximum Imperial White Fiandre

Fiandre’s engineered tiles emulate the bold veining that occurs in marble. Unlike the natural stone, these porcelain slabs are lightweight and resistant to stains and wear and tear.

WeatherLogic is an integrated sheathing and structural board system that requires no secondary wrapping. By bonding a water-resistant overlay directly to the panel during construction, all the edges are sealed and then secured with seam and flashing tape to form a complete air-and-water-tight membrane system.

JM TPO SA - Flashing Membrane Johns Manville

This permanent membrane is designed for vertical applications and therefore ideal for curbs and parapet walls. With a peel-and-stick application, the self-adhering barrier makes installation easier and faster.

Securock ExoAir 430 Air Barrier System USG Corporation & Tremco Inc.

USG and Tremco commercial sealants and waterproofing teamed up on a new barrier system, Securock ExoAir 430 System. The glass-mat sheathing panel is factory coated with Tremco’s ExoAir Brand of high performing air-water barrier fluid membrane to mitigate air infiltration, exfiltration, and water penetration. Factory application eliminates field-application inconsistencies and weather challenges and results in simplifying and speeding the construction cycle. The panel is installed using Tremco’s sealants and transition membranes to achieve air-water barrier continuity.

HardieWrap Weather Barrier James Hardie

James Hardie’s trademarked MircoTech coating keeps moisture from soaking into the membrane without compromising ventilation so that water vapor can escape from the inside. The system is ideal for both cold, humid climates and hot, humid environments.

DELTA-DRY & LATH Dörken

This unique weather barrier-screening hybrid for stucco and manufactured stone facades combines a rainscreen system with preinstalled fiberglass lath. The ventilated exterior coating wicks moisture from the outside while simultaneously providing open air flow for moisture to escape from the inside.

Wolverine Wrap The Griff Network

Made from a cross-woven polypropylene, Wolverine Wrap acts as a weather and air barrier to keep external moisture out and provide ventilation for interior moisture to escape. It is available in widths of 3 feet, 8 feet, 9 feet, or 10 feet and lengths of 100 feet, 150 feet, and 195 feet.

For architects: furniture for the great outdoors
Roast a rack of ribs on David Rockwell’s behemoth outdoor drill and then devour them all in a precious daybed. With summer just around the corner, we collected the following outdoor furniture either designed by or for architects. Rockwell by Caliber Rockwell Group for Caliber Appliances Rockwell Group teamed up with Caliber on a 360-degree grill. Allowing people to gather on all four sides, the grill fosters a communal cooking experience. It features an aluminum canopy that emulates how a table cloth drapes over a picnic table. Cottage Patricia Urquiola for Kettal Milan-based Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola, designed the daybed to be flexible for all climates with a customizable system of louvers, curtains, and fabric coverings. It is available in various wood stains and colored textiles. Origami Ramón Esteve for Vibia Spain-based architecture firm Ramón Esteve Studio conjured this otherworldly modular lighting system inspired by the Japanse paper-folding art. Using a single point as the source of electricity, various LED fixtures can aggregate to create virtually endless compositions. ELEMENTS Claesson Koivisto Rune for Widala Swedish architecture, industrial design, and interior design firm, Claesson Koivisto Rune designed a collection of public grills and furniture that emulates circular geometries found in nature. Consisting of stools, benches, planters, and a range of barbecues in different sizes, the pieces are perfect for public parks or backyards of multifamily homes. Acacia Extremis With a new take on the traditional umbrella form, this inverted, asymmetrical parasol creates the most amount of shading from the least amount of surface area. Mimicking the small leaf canopies of the Acacia tree, it is positioned upwards towards the sun (instead of downward) to create as much shade as a larger parasol could.

Smart systems to manage the building from inside out
Managing a property can be difficult, but these new smart building systems work to prevent damage and allow you to take action as soon as a problem is detected. Addressing everything from plumbing to Wi-Fi to air quality, here are the newest solutions in residential and commercial applications.
Duette LightLock Shades Hunter Douglas Can’t sleep without complete darkness? Hunter Douglas has a custom window treatment that lives up to its name. The honeycomb-shaped “Lightlock” shades feature overlapping front and back panels that block incoming light. The system can easily be lowered or lifted with the PowerView app and other voice-activated smart home systems.
Phyn Plus Phyn Make your home or office watertight with Phyn Plus. The patented water monitoring system uses ultrasonic sensors to monitor any plumbing system 240 times per second. The app allows users to monitor water usage, shut off the water, and send leak alerts.
Onelink Surround Wi-Fi First Alert Onelink Surround Wi-Fi provides full-speed internet connection around the house (even in “dark zones”) with the benefit of cyber security. The system is compatible with Onelink alarms, enabling connectivity between smart building systems and providing controls to monitor and react to emergency alerts via the app.
SiXCOMBO Honeywell Home In addition to detecting smoke and heat, Honeywell’s monitoring system detects carbon monoxide. The system uses infrared sensors to detect flames, while thermometers measure temperature. Using an encrypted two-way wireless platform, the system alerts all sensors across the home if a danger is detected with blinking lights and voice alerts announcing what action should be taken.
Radiant Furniture Power Center Legrand Providing electricity to both standard plugs and USB connections, Legrand’s power hub is a breeze to install in existing furniture and infrastructure. From a chair to a bookshelf, the power and charging solution fits easily on flat surfaces or can be mounted vertically to provide connectivity in convenient areas.

ZERO BLUE Soraa Healthy
On earth, the naturally occurring circadian light cycle produces the highest levels of blue light in the morning, and, as the day progresses, less and less—effectively sending your body the message that it is time to sleep. The aptly dubbed ZERO BLUE LED bulb emits none of the aforementioned hue to promote better sleep. Designed with a pairing of green and red phosphors, the LEDs produce a white light.
