Product> Best Practitioners: Six Designers Share Their Go-To Products
Trust is earned. To be ensconced in the files of a design firm, products must pass professional muster on many fronts: performance, aesthetics, and value, prime among them. From high-tech building materials to hand-crafted finishes, architects and designers share their favorite resources with AN. Linear Plaster-In LED Systems (Pictured at top) Pure Lighting "Recessed lighting from Pure Lighting. So simple, clean, and neat with an huge variety of applications. Perfect to make a design statement; can be used in a group to create a pattern, or to accentuate a painting or wall, or to outline anything. This type of lighting has endless creative possibilities." Laura Bohn Principal Designer Laura Bohn Design Associates New York City Rectangle Basin Vitraform “Regarding hospitality interiors, for designers the sky is the limit. Spaces have to convey originality and stand out from the competition. That said, Vitraform basins achieve this objective. Made in the USA, each basin is one-of-a-kind and the execution of detail is flawless. I am particularly taken by the Bronze finish; with its molten, liquid-gold quality, it conveys a level of grandeur and luxury that is unmatched. The Starphire Satin Mirror finish resembles an abalone interior, iridescent and magical. Plus as the surface turns wet, it transforms into a mirrored finish and requires only minimal care. Having a resource like Vitraform that is both practical and breathtaking means minimal hassle and endless beauty. For me, that is priceless.” Christina Hart Senior Principal | Director of Hospitality Interior Design HOK New York City SPD SmartGlass Research Frontiers “On the roof terrace of our USA Pavilion at the 2015 Expo in Milan, we are using almost 10,000 square feet of dimmable glass to provide shade or sun, depending on the weather and comfort needs. SPD SmartGlass changes almost instantaneously and can be treated as an array of very large pixels; we are programming images, patterns, words, and reactive motion into what would otherwise be a simple glass canopy.” James Biber Biber Architects New York City Finishing and Edge-Protection Profiles Schluter Systems “The product I have used in every bath and kitchen job is the tile edge from Schluter. It is an elegant accent that enhances the design, and also solves the problem of using tiles that don't have a finished edge. It's a perfect bespoke detail.” Barry Goralnick Barry Goralnick Architecture and Interior Design New York City Veneziano Venetian Plaster Vasari “We have had a ten-year obsession with Venetian plaster that dates back to measuring a Carlo Scarpa building with students in Treviso at the Canova Gypsotecha. We could never get the same quality workmanship here, so we hired Italian contractors to teach us the recipes, the troweling, the joinery. Now we teach our own subcontractors. The material is unique for its durability, depth, and subtle sheen. The variegated quality of the finish speaks of a hand-crafted surface.” Alberto Alfonso Alfonso Architects Tampa, Florida Vela LD in Onyx Stainless MGS "Simply put, MGS faucets are like high-precision plumbing machines. Beautifully designed, and exquisitely crafted from solid stainless steel, they are sleek and refined. The look, the feel, and the attention to detail is second to none and they are a pleasure to use. In addition to specifying MGS fittings for many of my projects, I have the Vela LD kitchen faucet installed in my home.” Lev Bereznycky Project Manager Lundberg Design San Francisco

Product> Facing the Wall: 6 Wild Wallcoverings
Wallcoverings have come a long way since the days of fuzzy, flocked papers in garish colors. Today, the erstwhile decorative product offers added value in the form of LEED credits, antimicrobial coatings, and even light-transmitting properties. Read on to see what's on our radar. Featherlight Flavor Paper Designed by Karen Hsu of Omnivore and Keryn Dizon, this pattern has a 27 ½-inch repeat; 27-inch-wide rolls are 15 feet long. The delicate photographic image comes in four standard colorways, with custom colors available; on clay-coat paper or silver mylar. Trace Trove Trace/Trove This tranquil scene—a silhouetted forest landscape, reflected in still “waters”—seems equal part photographic and hand-painted. The repeat width is 67 inches; the vertical repeat is 144 inches. In five colorways. Overlay/Underlay Wolf-Gordon Designed by Kevin Walz, this collection of wallcoverings was developed by scanning the reverse side of a swatch of painted linen and then overlapping that image with a scan of the front of the canvas. Printed with translucent inks, the patterns recall silkscreens or block prints. Henrik Large Designtex This striking, Scandinavian-inspired pattern is a kaleidoscope of bright, bold hues, and uses saturated color and crisp lines to create a sophisticated, contemporary, and playful design. Printed on a DNA substrate, this wallcovering’s strong vertical and diagonal lines produce a dynamic pattern, while from a distance the crisp edges blend into an overall design that recalls an ikat weave. ColourTec Glow Architects Paper Available in March 2015, this paper is a paintable, phosphorescent wallcovering. Activated by either natural or artificial light, the paper can be used for decorative or way-finding applications, such as signaling emergency egress routes. Spyro Carnegie Part of the Xorel Final Touch Collection, Spyro features an embroidered pattern that conjures a modern, geometric lace. Despite its delicate appearance, it is water-based solvent and bleach cleanable. PVC-free and Cradle-to-Cradle Silver certified, it is available in five colorways.

Product> SpecSheet: Six Super Surfacing Treatments
Long the workhorses of finishes, composites have come a long way. Mineral- or wood-based, polymers, ceramics—new chemistries and production methods have expanded the both the performance range and the aesthetic qualities of these surface materials. Here are six new products that are as durable as they are attractive. Neolith TheSize Neolith (pictured at top) combines some of the finest natural raw materials available with the most advanced industrial technology to provide cutting-edge surface materials for both interior and exterior installations. The products combine functionality and beauty in sintered porcelain slabs of 5mm or 10mm thicknesses for cladding and countertop surfaces, respectively. The natural materials include clays, feldspar, silica, and mineral oxides for exciting color options all of which contribute to excellent wearability and a long life that does not require any special care, just water and a mild detergent for cleaning. In addition the material is lightweight, waterproof, hygienic and resistant to high temperatures, scratches, and abrasions. TechTop LG Hausys TechTop is a surface with wireless charging capabilities. The technology is seamlessly embedded into the HI-MACS surface with a single hidden connection to the outlet. TechTop utilizes Qi inductive charging technology—the universal standard for wireless charging of battery-operated mobile devices. Electricity is transmitted wirelessly via electromagnetic fields instead of cables. HI-MACS surfaces hold a transmitter coil that generates a magnetic field through an alternating current. The field resonates with the receiver (in this case, a mobile device) and induces up to 5 watts of voltage. TechTop surface-embedded wireless charging maintains a safe transfer of power thanks to an integral high voltage and overheating detector. Without an exposed conductor there is minimal risk of fire hazard or electric shock. Twill Collection Arborite Fashion meets interior design with Twill, a new laminate pattern from Arborite. It combines the warmth of fabric with the playful nature of graphics to create a friendly and visually soft surface. By making the texture more illustrative, Twill becomes a versatile pattern, suited for formal and casual environments alike. With seven color options ranging from vibrant to neutral, it can be used as a background texture or pulled to the forefront for a friendly, confident effect. Deep Nocturne DuPont Corian Deep Nocturne is a classic jet black solid surfacing that utilizes proprietary DeepColor technology from DuPont Surfaces to achieve greater depth of color and improved durability. Other attributes include improved colorfastness in hot and wet environments and ease of fabrication and installation. In addition to the new aesthetics and functionality the material is more durable, reducing the scratch appearance by fifty percent and increasing resistance to impact whitening. There are eleven new colors with Corian DeepColor technology: Deep Anthracite, Deep Bedrock, Deep Black Quartz, Deep Caviar, Deep Espresso, Deep Mink, Deep Nocturne, Deep Night Sky, Deep Sable, Deep Space and Deep Storm. Formica Laminate Jonathan Adler Collection Formica The Formica Laminate Jonathan Adler Collection comprises nine bold new color and pattern combinations designed to make countertops pop and surfaces shine. The collection is the combination of Formica Corporation’s unmatched design flexibility and performance with Adler’s signature aesthetic of irreverent luxury. The new color and pattern combinations are perfect for countertops, backsplashes, vanities, cabinets and more. “Lacquered Linen”, inspired by mid-century modern furniture, is available in green, orange, charcoal, and crème. It features a glossy finish for a new spin on a classic texture. “Malachite”, inspired by precious stones and patterns of the 60s and 70s, is available in crisp blue and a subtle charcoal, both with a glossy finish. “Greek Key”, a timeless motif made modern with bold color and scale, is available tone-on-tone with a matte finish in orange, blue, and charcoal. Linear Line Smith & Fong Inspired by the depth and movement of hand loomed fabric, the Linear Line of bamboo panels feature a carved face layer that is perforated to reveal a graphic inner core. For interior use, the collection is available in six architecturally inspired styles. The Linear Line is made from 100-percent FSC-Certified bamboo, which is also rapidly renewable and free of urea formaldehyde. The ¾-inch-thick sheets are 4-foot by 8-foot and are available pre-finished or unfinished in Amber or Natural colors. Linear Line panels can contribute toward three different USGBC LEED credits (MR 6 Rapidly Renewable Materials; MR 7 Certified Wood EQ 4.4 Low-Emitting Materials, Composite Wood). Product> Tile: Six Top Picks for Architectural Applications
Ceramic or porcelain, mosaic or large-format, rectified or squared, tile is a clay canvas for not only original expressions, but also for convincing imitations of natural materials. Here’s a sampling of new products. Fossil Design Tale Studio / DTS Fossil is a hand-drawn illustration, inspired by prehistoric imprints of plants and animals on rock formations. The collection was designed by Kasia Zareba, the winner of the manufacturer’s Create Your Own Tile competition. The 24-inch by 24-inch porcelain tiles are available in beige, brown, and grey and five patterns. Tierras Collections Mutina Tierras is a visually rich collection of tiles designed by Patricia Urquiola with a definite nod to nature and ceramics' humble beginnings. Inspired by the look and feel of terra cotta and lava, Tierras comes in two complementary lines. One is the Industrial line (shown) of unglazed homogenous porcelain stoneware in six colors, two geometric decors, and a range of formats and transversal cuts, allowing for the creation of irregular forms and unique compositions for floors and walls. The other family, called Artisanal, is a series of three-dimensional surfaces made of extruded natural terra cotta. Roof tiles, bricks, hollow bricks, and partition walls are metaphorically undone and unstructured, only to be reinterpreted in a new way. In six earth tones, ranging from browns to blues. Freestone Ceramiche Astor In nature, stone is a living, changing organism. Over time, it accumulates layers of sediment, which may be variegated or homogeneous in color and composition. This collection of porcelain color-through tile is rated for indoor and outdoor use. In three colorways and ten sizes, including bullnose trim and mosaic. Rorschach Collection Clé Clé introduces the Rorschach Tile Collection, designed by Paul Simmons and Alistair McAuley of Glasgow-based Timorous Beasties. The Rorschach Tile Collection is composed of five designs that are hand-lithographed on 12-inch by 12-inch limestone or thassos marble tiles. Inspired by traditional 9th-century damask motifs, Timorous Beasties have integrated the classic pattern with Rorschach conceptual imagery. The combination of a familiar medieval motif and a modern blotch-pattern believed to unlock the subconscious has resulted in subversive floral abstractions. Simmons and McAuley use hand drawing, marbling, and puddles of ink to achieve their new damask imagery. "These tile patterns are a reversal of the expected," says Simmons. "Blotches, splats, and drips are normally regarded as disordered accidents. By re-contextualizing the damask and using it as a vehicle to carry Rorschach-esque symmetrical imagery, we have created beauty out of something conventionally repellent." Soula Azuliber A compelling mix of concrete and encaustic looks in a high performance porcelain tile, the Soula line has aesthetic applications in both contemporary and historical settings. Edge Fireclay Tile Available in a dynamic color range that invites creativity, the Edge collection offers three modular options, including the largest handmade tile on the market: 3-inches by 9-inches, 3-inches by 18-inches, and 6-inches by 18-inches. Precisely cut, the tiles are installed with minimal, 1/8-inch grout spacings, resulting in a smooth, continuous polished look for walls, floors, or countertops. Rated for indoor and outdoor use, Edge is made of more than 70 percent recycled content: Clay, glass, waste porcelain, spent abrasives, and granite dust. A gradient color palette of twelve matte finishes is inspired by the hues found in natural stones and minerals.

Product> Floorcovering: Six Carpets with an Architectural Edge
Enhancing acoustics, elevating comfort, and offering an attractive shot of color underfoot—carpeting can impact an interior in both subtle and obvious ways. Kick off your shoes and see what we’ve discovered. Tatami Nanimarquina The new Tatami collection by Ariadna Miquel and Nani Marquina are the first color pieces to be part of Nanimarquina’s Natural Collection. Inspired by Japanese straw tatami mats, Tatami is made with a combination of soft, New Zealand wool and bright, structured jute. These complementary fibers are hand loomed together to create the perfect marriage of style and comfort. Available in several colors. Cell Lama Cell carpet is not produced in a traditional way. No loom, knitting machine, or tufting technique is used; neither is it printed. The material creates its own pattern. The carpet is made of industrial woolfelt, which is pressed and then cut into strings. The strings are put together randomly, so an organic, cellular-like pattern evolves, along with a playful finishing of the edges. If damaged, the strings can simply be replaced with new ones. A natural product, woolfelt is non-flammable, soundproofing, water-repellent and breathable. Cell is available in 32 colors. The accent stripes are in black or wool-white; the dots are always wool-white. Hem Carpet Concept When designing the new Hem collection, Ben van Berkel of UN/Studio drew his inspiration from the lively structures of natural and urban landscapes. The collection is based on non-directional patterns of colored dots, which appear in ever-new graphic images and are perceived in various ways when viewed from different angles and distances. Van Berkel explains that part of the intention for the designs and the patterns was to give them more complexity through the use of different colors and the directionality. This creates a spatial layering which is unusual in a two-dimensional surface, but can often be found in the architect’s work. Hem combines the playful lightness of varying pixel-like patterns with an extremely hard-wearing and durable woven carpet suitable for offices and hospitality projects. Breaking Form Mohawk Group The Breaking Form Collection pushes past tradition, giving designers new approaches to color, shape, scale and movement via modular carpet planks. This collaboration with Mac Stopa of Massive Design explores bold lines and geometric patterns that transform the floor, a two-dimensional surface, into a seemingly three-dimensional plane. The 12-inch by 36-inch planks are available in three patterns and nine colorways. Cut & Compose Shaw Contract Group Letters, numbers and abstract elements are cut, rotated, deconstructed, and recomposed to graphic effect in this new collection of floorcovering. Transforming learning environments into motivational spaces, education makes a bold design statement in tile and performance broadloom. Offered in three 24-inch by 24-inch tile styles and two broadloom styles, Cut & Compose is easily installed in any configuration, and the unique color patterns, layered textures, and gradations allow dye lots to blend imperceptibly. Manufactured with Shaw Solution Q Extreme 100% solution dyed nylon on EcoWorx Performance Broadloom and EcoWorx backing, this carpet is Cradle to Cradle Certified at the Silver level. Common Theme Interface Skinny plank carpet-tile modules measuring 25cm x 1m are new additions to the Common Theme collection of squares, creating a series that can yield uncommon and distinctive flooring design for a variety commercial and workplace spaces. Featuring clean lines and a neutral palette, the trio of additions includes: CT111™, a seamless look with grids of varying scale that form a collage of latticework; CT112™, a diffused design that produces a marbled effect; and CT113™, a style that delivers a strong punch of geometry. Easy to configure into a customized design statement, Common Theme planks and squares can be combined through color, contrast, and complementary styling, all with the benefits of simple, glue-free installation and selective replacement.
