Landmarks, until very recently, were essential to urban navigation. The role of the landmark has changed dramatically now that people can carry the planet in their pocket. Iconic landmarks like Trinity Church and the Chrysler Building now compete for eyeballs not only with the traffic, signage, and bustle of the city around them but with a steady stream of emails, app notifications, and breaking news alerts. We look for the Flatiron Building when we need to post to the ‘gram, not when we need to figure out where we’re going.

While the way that people relate to the physical world around them is evolving, this also creates new opportunities for place-based brands looking to catch people’s attention, raise awareness, and increase engagement.
