Experiments in Design: 20 Years of the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program

July 30, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

$10

Since its inception twenty years ago by MoMA and MoMA PS1, the Young Architects Program (YAP) has been committed to offering emerging architectural talent the opportunity to design a temporary outdoor installation at MoMA PS1 that provides respite with shade, seating, and water. From Phillip Johnson’s multi-tiered DJ booth and dance pavilion in 1999 to this year’s cyclorama by Pedro & Juana, these site-specific installations have blurred the lines between exhibit and exhibit space, socially minded shelter and Warm Up party venue.

This program will include a presentation of YAP’s 20-year history by Sean Anderson, Associate Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art that will look back at the evolution of architectural thinking demonstrated by the winning projects, as well as a presentation by Ana Paula Ruiz Galindo and Mecky Reuss of Pedro & Juana of their winning entry Hórama Rama.

Mimi Hoang, partner at nARCHITECTS, 2004 YAP winner and jury member for this year’s competition, will moderate a discussion among the presenters who will be joined by Barry Bergdoll, the Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History and Archaeology and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Columbia University and the Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at MoMA from 2007-2013.
