Architects as Museum Directors

January 6, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm EST

A panel discussion among museum directors trained as architects proposes interesting questions for both the expanding reach of the profession and for the future of art museums in the United States. A role historically occupied by art historians, museum directorship is rapidly changing, now drawing on professions from architecture to finance. Is this an expanding trend or a set of unique instances? Do architects as museum directors and their board of trustees, as clients, get better planned and designed museum buildings from their selected design teams?

The insights of these distinguished panelists from behind the scenes can shed light on the pre-planning, fundraising, programming, designing, building, and then sustaining of these typologically complex projects. Because art museums today have a wide array of growing audiences and stakeholders, the ultimate question is, how does the public benefit?

Speakers:
Aaron Betsky, Dean, Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, Taliesin; Former Director, Cleveland Museum of Art
Terry Riley, Principal, Keenen Riley Architects; Former Director, Miami Art Museum (now Perez Art Museum)
Joseph Rosa, Director, University of Michigan – Museum of Art
