AN has been following the AIA Architecture Billings Index closely over the last year, as it is the only real economic indicator for the industry. Not surprisingly, given the bad economic news flying around of late, October’s numbers are by far the worst the 13-year-old index has ever shown. But if that was not proof enough, our teams in California and New York have fresh reports on the recent spate of layoffs that have roiled the industry. For the numbers can drop all they want, but the real problems start when people begin to lose their jobs.
