Since the devastating earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, a huge outpouring of humanitarian aid has been directed towards the country. However, the transition from relief to reconstruction has been slow. In an effort to support this rebuilding effort, Haiti Habitat announces this Call for Collaborative Design, which will provide vernacular housing prototypes for construction across the various environments that compose Haiti's landscape. The first stage involves the submission of designs for a single-family house, to be based upon the criteria outlined in the Collaboration Brief. The proposed design will be part of a small community cluster of approximately six structures, which may share common utilities (such as a wastewater management system) and support structure (such as a shared garden and/or shared cooking and toilet facilities). These designs should emphasize adaptability under any geographical condition in Haiti. Collaborators will be asked to seriously consider utilizing local materials and construction methods to the largest extent possible. Overall construction will be rquired to be limited within a certain cost structure provided within the Collaboration Brief. This is a three-stage process, open to design professionals and students.
